The International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, was founded in 1955 under the motto "World Peace through World Trade, World Trade through World Ports." The IAPH would work to enable member ports to share their experiences and expertise to make them all more efficient and compatible with evolving needs. IAPH comprises now
some 220 Regular Members - leading ports in nearly 90 countries and economies; public port authorities, terminal operators and government agencies. The member ports together handle over 60% of the Word¡¯s sea-borne trade in terms of tonnage of cargos and some 80% of the world¡¯s container traffic. In addition, 123 shipping, stevedoring and warehousing businesses, national/regional port associations, manufacturers/providers of port-related products/services and academic parties are represented as Associate Members. IAPH has been granted consultative status as a Non-Governmental Organization
by the six inter-governmental bodies, ECOSOC, ILO, IMO, UNCTAD, UNEP and WCO.
