There are three basic mining methods: surface mining, underground mining and solution mining. However, most of
the metallic mineral resources and energy resources such as oil and natural gas are buried thousands of meters under the earth’s surface, which can only be detected with the finest equipment and technology. As a result, one can never overestimate the importance of underground mining.

With the development of the industrialization and urbanization, the chances to find surface or hypergene mines are gradually decreasing, and the trends for the mining industry to go underground is even more obvious.

At present, the underground metal mines composes 89% of the overall metal mines of China, and the underground iron ore mines, though only account for 10% of the national output, are on the transition from surface to underground mining. Thus, underground mining technology is becoming more and more important. A lot of new technologies and techniques are being used in the mining industry, but there is still a technology gap between the Asian countries and western countries. Whether the underground tunneling or mining, the technologies employed by Asian countries are perceived as outdated in an expert’s view. And the project management, throughput in the quarry, and labor productivity are to be enhanced.

In recent years, while on their development paths to industrialization, Asia Economies, especially China is experiencing the natural resources bottleneck more then ever. This developing country with the highest economic growth is very eager to find the breakthrough in its search for natural resources to foster its industrial development.

March 22nd, 2009, officer from The Ministry of Land and Resources PRC announced that China will start its ‘Drill Down Into Deep Earth’ exploration plan in order to find mineral resources and alleviate geological calamities. So, the need to speed up the technology importing and updating is becoming more and more pressing.
