Shanghai Society of Aeronautics was established in January 27, 1988, and its predecessor is Shanghai Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics which was set up in the early 1980s. It’s a juridical association by registration, and it’s a group member of Shanghai Association for Science and Technology. Shanghai Society of Aeronautics aims to promote the development and prosperity of China aviation industry, and to promote the popularization of aviation science and technology. Shanghai Society of Aeronautics is under the administration of Shanghai Aviation Industry Bureau and it has more than 40 group members and nearly 1,000 individual members.

Comrade Jiang Zemin and Wang Daohan respectively wrote their inscription "Zhan Chi Fei Xiang" and "Ying Ji Chang Kong" to congratulate the establishment of institute, Comrade Zhu Yuli and Ye Shuhua also wrote their inscription for the 10th anniversary of institute. Academician Liu Gaozhuo and Shen Wenqing respectively wrote their inscription for the first Shanghai International Aviation and Aerospace Electronics and Equipment Exhibition and academic forums organized in December,2005. In July 12th 2005, the 4th Congress was convened and the 4th Council was elected. It has nine committees which include committee of experts, aerodynamics, electronics, aerospace mechanical engineering, automation, materials science and engineering, flight technology, aviation maintenance, special vehicles and soft science committee. And it has four working committee which include organization, academic, popular science education and international exchanges and other offices like the secretariat.
